What I'm up to

Chamber music jazz in a unique lineup INSOMNIA

For his new programme ‘Insomnia’, saxophonist Dick de Graaf invited two talented young singers to join him. Nina Jeltema completed her vocal studies at Codarts in 2025, and Linda Ropa will finish her master’s at the Utrecht Conservatoire in 2026. Previously, she had already studied classical piano and singing at the Rovigo Conservatory (Italy).

Together, they represent the next generation of musicians and feel right at home in De Graaf’s hybrid chamber music, which incorporates elements from pop, jazz, and classical music.

In addition to his roles as saxophonist and composer, De Graaf also steps forward in ‘Insomnia’ as a writer and adaptor of lyrics, shining his light on the world of today. Alongside his own texts, he draws on poetry by, among others, Judith Herzberg, Paul McCartney, and Remco Campert.

Thanks to the surprising combination of saxophone and two female voices, with a dynamic division of roles between soloist and accompaniment, ‘Insomnia’ offers a unique sound within the world of chamber music.

Lifeline: carried away by his smooth saxophone sound

Enjoy our wide-ranging musical horizons, spanning rhythmic jazz and free improvisations on my own compositions, as well as arrangements of works by Franz Schubert and Charles Mingus.

Soms is het gewoon genoeg om je te laten meeslepen door een traditioneel akoestisch jazzgeluid, gedragen door de soepele tenorsax van Dick de Graaf – Volkskrant, Gijsbert Kamer

J.S. Bach also makes an appearance, with improvisations where I revisit my first instrument, the flute.

Art of the Duo:
Dick de Graaf & Miran Noh

Another new project for 2026 is my collaboration with young Korean piano talent Miran Noh.

Jazzenzo.nl

Miran Noh is a South Korean jazz pianist and leader of her own ensemble, NOHMI. Despite her young age, she has already made a name for herself as an intense and adventurous pianist and a surprising composer. 2025, she won the ‘Records Award’ from the Keep an Eye Foundation and the Erasmus Jazz Prize from Codarts. She has performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival, So What’s Next, InJazz, Cairo Jazz Festival, Avignon Jazz Festival, and several festivals in Romania and Slovenia. With a background in classical music and jazz piano, her playing is rooted in a versatile style that connects tradition and innovation.

For me, Miran is the ideal duo partner, creatively unafraid to take the initiative while also being an intelligent and tasteful accompanist. I am looking forward to the many concerts to come!
